Congressional Republicans just spent another $70 billion on mass deportations. The only silver lining here is that ICE will never get its legitimacy back.
Let’s get the DRMs in and then MAKE THEM change it. Do remember the President will veto. Do remember we should make him be on the record as vetoing stuff. Just for posterity.
What's your estimate of what percentage of the DHS boondoggle will simply disappear into the pockets of crooks contracted for phony deals? I'm guessing something like 30 percent. Not anywhere close to enough to put 'em out of business, but worth tracking and exposing.
I could totally see being a lot higher than 30%. The agency has no precedent for spending anywhere near the amount of mandatory spending they’ve been given by Congress.
I am a human rights attorney and a Latin American immigrant, and I want to name the part of this that is even darker than the dollar figure. To the commenter asking how much disappears into crooked contracts: the number matters, but the mechanism matters more. Funding ICE through 2029 by reconciliation does not just hand the agency $70 billion. It deletes the annual appropriations fight, which was the one recurring moment when anyone got to look at the money and ask where it went. That was the checkpoint. They did not defund the checkpoint. They routed around it, so there is no longer a yearly vote where the spending has to justify itself in public. This is the pattern I keep documenting everywhere else in this administration: you do not break
The democrats better not go back to business as usual . Americans are suffering under Trump. Get us some relief in health care and food prices. Reduce the cost of everyday living.
Keep in mind, we have learned from Trump, that the president can turn off basically any and all congressionally funded agencies and programs on a whim. Not just that, but also fire any executive branch employee at any time. That means, outside of the will power, there is nothing stopping the next president from 1) immediately halting any and all funding to ICE/CBP, 2) fire all of these employees. The next step could be publishing dossiers on these individuals agents as having them amongst the general population is clearly a national security threat.
This can all be done, day one, by one individual and this doesn’t even touch criminal charges.
As ever, thank you for your Paul Revere ride to us. They’re coming by land and sea. Just in time to torpedo the World (sic) Cup. Benjamin Franklin was prescient: “a Republic … if you can keep it”
While it is sad that this budget passed. It is the viewpoint of the majority of Voting Americans. It passed fair and square through both houses of Congress and there is no arguing about that. America is great because it is a country of laws. We make laws, but then again we can repeal them. We should be addressing our need for immigration reform through our congressmen, no rioting in the streets. It makes more people side with ICE when they see destruction in their communities. Be respectful to all law enforcement and fire personnel.
Or, Fuck ICE. Americans (at least we truly patriotic ones) will never abide the tyranny of an unaccountable federal secret police force, which is what ICE has always been. Now it’s on steroids. People are paying attention. Thank God. I suggest you do the same.
The real question is will the democrats finally reform the immigration process?
And pass One Big Beautiful Amnesty …?

Here for ya, Stephen! It will get worse before it gets better, but it will get better.
