Three Democratic Bills That Would Essentially Abolish ICE
Shri Thanedar’s is the most straightforward. Jimmy Gomez’s is the cleverst. Delia Ramirez’s gets into the weeds.
WASHINGTON — Since Donald Trump signed his One Big Beautiful Bill Act into law last July 4th, ICE has transformed into the most heavily funded (and hated) law enforcement agency in American history—commanding a budget that dwarfs the FBI, the DEA, and even rivals Russia’s entire military spending.
Now, three Democratic lawmakers have introduced legislation that would, through different mechanisms, effectively dismantle the agency’s enforcement apparatus.
The bills arrive as ICE faces mounting public outrage following a series of fatal shootings, most notably the January 7 killing of Renee Nicole Good in Minneapolis, a 37-year-old mother shot by a masked ICE agent during a protest. Good’s death catalyzed what had been simmering Democratic anger into concrete legislative action.
