California Leads 20-State Coalition Accusing Feds of Illegally Giving Medicaid Info to ICE
WASHINGTON — California and 19 other states sued the Trump administration on Monday, alleging that the federal government illegally shared confidential Medicaid records with immigration authorities, potentially endangering health care access for millions of residents.
In a 59-page complaint filed in federal court in San Francisco, the coalition of states accused the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and Department of Homeland Security (DHS) of violating multiple federal laws by transferring protected health information from state Medicaid agencies to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) without consent or public notice.
“In June, 2025, the federal government’s policy of keeping State Medicaid agencies’ healthcare records confidential abruptly changed, without notice, opportunity for public input, or reasoned decision-making,” the lawsuit states.
