Refugees’ Safety Net Cut by Two-Thirds
Cash and medical aid reduced to just four months, straining vulnerable families.
WASHINGTON—On March 21, the Administration for Children and Families (ACF), a division of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), published a notice in the Federal Register that sent shockwaves through the refugee support community. The Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR), tasked with aiding refugees as they transition to life in the United States, announced a drastic reduction in the eligibility period for Refugee Cash Assistance (RCA) and Refugee Medical Assistance (RMA). Effective 45 days from the notice—May 5—the eligibility window for these critical programs will shrink from 12 months to just four months for new participants. This marks a significant rollback of support for some of the nation’s most vulnerable newcomers.
