Raskin: Mace’s Immigration Bill Could ‘Boomerang Against Victims’
Plus, Domestic Violence Coalition Opposes Reintroduced Immigration Bill, Citing Survivor Risks
WASHINGTON – House Judiciary Ranking Member Jamie Raskin (D-MD) dismissed a new immigration bill Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC) reintroduced on the first day of the new term. “It’s perfectly redundant,” Raskin told Migrant Insider on Tuesday. “It just reproduces the law, except that it excludes all the waivers and exceptions that currently exist,” he continued.
The National Task Force to End Sexual & Domestic Violence, a coalition of hundreds of organizations including the National Association of Jewish Women, came out publicly against Mace’s immigration bill, which passed the House before dying in the Senate last year in the 118th Congress.
In September, the task force wrote a letter explaining why they opposed Mace’s bill which purports to deport immigrants who commit sex crimes, like rape. “It invites the additional scrutiny of survivors during the course of their efforts to obtain immigration protections and safety from violence,” said the letter.
