Raskin, AOC, and Tlaib Lead Opposition as Laken Riley Act Clears House
The controversial anti-immigrant bill now heads to Trump's desk to be signed into law.
WASHINGTON — A heated, one-hour debate took place on the floor of the House of Representatives on Wednesday afternoon as Rep. Jaime Raskin (D-MD) led the argument against Rep. Tom McClintock (R-CA) over the Laken Riley Act, a controversial anti-immigrant bill by Rep. Mike Collins (R-GA) that will mandate custody of migrants for minor offenses like shoplifting, and empower state attorneys general to sue the federal government over the minutiae of immigration policy.

Several members of the Hispanic and Progressive Caucuses, like Reps. Alexandria Ocasio (D-NY), Delia Ramirez (D-IL), Maxwell Frost (D-FL), Rashida Tlaib (D-MI), and Adrian Espaillat (D-NY) rose in opposition to the bill, squaring off against MAGA stalwarts like Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) who, in typical fashion, used the platform to spread misinformation about undocumented immigrants and crime.
