Sen. Moody's Grand Jury Gamble: Turning Cops into ICE Wannabes

Built on a flimsy report alleging strip club sponsors and murderous migrants, Moody’s Stop GAPS Act swings at ORR’s flaws but misses the mark with fearmongering.

WASHINGTON — Senator Ashley Moody (R-FL) has introduced two new bills aimed at expanding state power in immigration enforcement and overhauling the federal government’s handling of unaccompanied migrant children. The proposed legislation—The RIPPLE Act and the Stop GAPS Act—targets what Moody described as “reckless and dangerous policies” of the Biden administration that, she claims, have enabled child trafficking and endangered national security.

The RIPPLE Act (Reimbursement for Immigration Partnerships with Police to Allow Local Law Enforcement) would expand the federal 287(g) program by reimbursing local and state law enforcement agencies for participating in immigration enforcement efforts. The bill would allow these agencies to dedicate already-sworn officers to immigration duties, serving as what Moody called a “force multiplier” while the federal government ramps up its own staffing.
