WASHINGTON — The era of “safe locations” for healthcare is effectively over. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) published a Federal Register notice yesterday officially authorizing the sharing of Medicaid applicant data with the Department of Homeland Security beginning today. The notice rescinds previous “interagency integrity” firewalls. This policy shift forces mixed-status families into an impossible calculus: access life-saving medical care or remain invisible to enforcement.
