J-1 Visa Program Faces Uncertainty Amid Trump’s Travel Policy Review
A recent update eased restrictions for 37 countries, but a new executive order could lead to fresh visa limitations and travel bans as early a next week.
The J-1 visa program, established under the Mutual Educational and Cultural Exchange Act of 1961, promotes international exchange by allowing foreign nationals to participate in educational and cultural programs in the U.S. It serves as a key instrument in fostering global understanding, strengthening diplomatic ties, and facilitating knowledge transfer across various industries.
On December 9, 2024, the U.S. Department of State updated the Exchange Visitor Skills List, removing 37 countries. Nationals from these countries are no longer subject to the two-year home-country physical presence requirement after completing their J-1 exchange visitor programs.
