I AM ashamed to be an American citizen! Gods help us all!

Pablo Manríquez's avatar

Me too, Doriane. This is one of the ugliest things I've ever covered.

I can not get my head around this. We dare to call ourselves a Christian nation. We're not even close. Words without action are meaningless.

Kristi Lau's avatar

I think it’s because we are now a Christian Nationalist nation. A Christian would NEVER be a Nationalist.

Jane Roberts's avatar

I think the words Nationalist and Christian don't even belong in the same sentence together.

Kristi Lau's avatar

Yeah…I almost wrote “Christian” Nationalists. And I think it’s more appropriate.

Pablo Manríquez's avatar

I think the tide is finally beginning to turn away from the Christian Nationalist moment, which has been a colossal failure in any practical sense, to deliver on the core priorities that put it in power: lowering prices, no foreign interventionism, protecting children from perverts ... MAGA has done the opposite of most of what they promised to their voters. IMO

Kristi Lau's avatar

Just listen to what Trump says others are doing. That usually means that’s what he is doing or has done. My hope is that regular folks can see through his lies and propaganda.

Please, Please someone, somebody help these children, they’re so helpless they’ve never asked for this!

What evil animals trump-miller are to hunt & trap these babies, you can’t even call them people!! Damn to hell all those that abuse these kid’s - along those in the “Paedo traffic trump-epstein syndicate”. To Anyones those, the consequences should be drastic, its NOT human to abuse children, whether emotionally, physically, mentally anything, those abusers need to be locked away from civilization.

Pablo Manríquez's avatar

It seems Juan Nicolás is doing much better now. I'll follow up tomorrow and see if there's an update, but last I checked he was, at long last, coming in from the cold as they say ... and by they, I mean Bob Marley

joannegucci's avatar

Oh yeah! 🌟 Thats such good news. Thank you for the update🦋😍💙✌🏽

Isn't it though?! I interview Lidia in the AM and will post our conversation. Consider subscribing to support our work :)

Is there a lawyer out there that willing to do some pro bono work to free this family.

Pablo Manríquez's avatar

The lawyers have been iced out of the detention facility for the last 48 hours, I'm told … pun intended. This is a developing story.

Full Frontal Loeb's avatar

There may be, but there are hundreds of thousands of these families. Each with their own stories, hopes, dreams, fears, and lives interrupted. Our asylum system ‘allows’ respondents to hire an attorney, accept the help of a legal services non-profit if they can find one with capacity, or get help from a private firm where lawyers are expected to offer a certain number of hours a month of pro-bono service. Unlike in criminal proceedings, there is no assurance that “If you cannot afford a lawyer, one will be appointed for you” (despite all we are told, being in the US without authorization is not a crime, it is a civil violation. The act of crossing without permission is a misdemeanor). Folks who are lucky enough to find a reputable lawyer with the time to represent them have a better chance of securing relief from deportation in the form of asylum than those who do not. That said, the “immigration system” is in reality a “detention and deportation machine.” Having an attorney does not ensure humane interactions or positive results. My guess is Joaquin Castro “going hard” for them will keep the issue in the press and should help them get out.

Pablo Manríquez's avatar

Smart points, sir! As for the press piece, all praises must go to Lidia Terrazas from Univision, without whom we'd be nowhere on this story.

Felicia Smith's avatar

A United States Congressman at least is giving it his all. This is a call to action if there ever was one!

Pablo Manríquez's avatar

Here here! Joaquin Castro is doing the work.

Alison Macgregor's avatar

Heart breaking. Sounds like something out of the Third Reich. Shame.

Jereme's avatar

Someone tell me why a 2 month old is in prison.

Pablo Manríquez's avatar

That is the biggest question of them all — and frankly there's no good answer because it absolutely should not be happening.

Tamalamb R's avatar

I keep asking the same question. How and who ? Who can stop this literal madness, hell on earth for these people and families? And how do we make that happen? Absolutely no one in our government seems to be able or interested in stopping the atrocities that are happening now. Who do we hold accountable besides the Trump administration. How do we get this to stop? How do we go about removing these people from office from our highest positions in government? Who will stand up for America and her people? Seriously WHO AND HOW?? I’m asking the question hopping for an actual answer from our countries higher ups. How can he be removed from office? Why is NO ONE TALKING ABOUT IT?

Maria Pickworth's avatar

It seems everyone is blaming someone one else. A lot of democrats are saying the republicans are in controle hence we ca do nothing. The question one needs to ask is why are there only so few of them going to these camps and speaking about it. Just a thought Why are no demonstrations staking place outside these places.

Emma's avatar

No one will stop spending. This would have already stopped.

Jenne Collette's avatar

What is wrong with Repubes who justify this horrible treatment?? Nobody any age should be subject to being locked in cages with limited air, food, and clean water!!!! Shame on America😢

Elizabeth 🇨🇦's avatar

Shared with such f-ing horror

Americans MUST start eye opening and taking action for God’s sake

Praying 🙏 ‼️‼️

I can't give a ❤️ indicating alignment with the writer because I reject the cruel reality of living under a despot POTUS and do not want the ❤️ to be misinterpreted as agreement with these conditions. This is the horrible reality of the land of the free turned into the land of prisons for profit, of the home of the brave now increasingly the home of the homeless and the cowardly politicians indolent to the plight of the refugee and the defenseless. Shame on all supporters of this vile GOP/POTUS regime.

Pablo Manríquez's avatar

That's fair, Manuel. Noted. And thank you for staying ever vigilant

Tomorrow starts Lent. Eight days till my 29th year of US citizenship is marked. Yes, I am ashamed, Pablo. Ashamed as I’ve tried to weather Caribbean fishermen being bombed, Nicole shot 3x in the face, Alex executed on the street, 5yo Liam in his bunny hat used as hunting bait, and now Juan Nicolas. I am ashamed of how far my adopted nation has descended down the ladder rungs labeled Gratitude, Generosity, Empathy and More Perfect Union/This Way Up. It’ll be a long climb back.

Pablo Manríquez's avatar

I'm ashamed, too, but I will say this: America sucks right now. Americans do not, mostly. Sure some among us are just incredibly stupid, or incredibly broken human beings who've convinced themselves that two-month-olds and asylum seekers should be expensively punished at our collective expense. But the vast majoritarian political vibe is putting a clear red line in the sand about masked paramilitary secret police, and departing a 2-month-old with bronchitis

Stacey S.'s avatar

Everything about this regime makes me rage! But this..unspeakable horror at the expense of a two month old? Where is the National rage?

Pablo Manríquez's avatar

It's a rising tide.

Question though: Do you listen to any music when raging? Mine lately are "People of the Sun" and "Bulls on Parade' by Rage Against the Machine

Stacey S.'s avatar

My counter to rage is my boxer dog & rescuing boxers in need. We’re all they have & they bring me so much joy. I’m also a music girl, love it all except Kid Rock.

Pablo Manríquez's avatar

I saw a meme where Epstein Island was referred to as “Kid Rock” and I don’t think I’ll ever not think of that when I see Kid Rock in the news. Btw, “Kid” is in his mid 50s, lol ew

Ana warner's avatar

This is just disgusting! I hope these people can bring a mega lawsuit against these prison companies and break them financially. That’s the only thing these criminals understand! They care nothing for human life, laws or basic decency. Take their $$ and make them as poor as those they’ve been abusing.

Pablo Manríquez's avatar

Methinks these mega lawsuits are in the works, though haven't confirmed. My take is that you will see them more on the backend of this presidency than on the frontend.

Emma's avatar

I wonder how many lawsuits, nationwide, core civic has had each year since 2007.

Ana warner's avatar

Evidently not enough. The CEOs are filthy rich. 🤑

Emma's avatar

Not just the ceos

Emma's avatar

Rich enough to decide not to retire - before the election....

Pablo Manríquez's avatar

It's a really great question, Emma. I'm not sure. A friend suggests asking in the Deep Research mode of Perplexity or Gemini, but I really don't know.

Emma's avatar

Someone signed the contract with CoreCivic.........Yes they did, even though it was previously closed.

I read that he was deported.

Pablo Manríquez's avatar

Confirmed: he was deported Thursday to Mexico
