ICE Targets Immigrants at Court Hearings, Green Card Interviews
Arrests at legal proceedings undermine trust in the immigration system.
WASHINGTON—or arrest during mandatory immigration court hearings or green card interviews, a practice critics say undermines trust in the legal immigration process.
A recent case reported by the BBC involves Mohsen Mahdawi, a former protest leader and Buddhist who expressed solidarity with both Palestinian and Jewish communities. Mahdawi was detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents in Vermont on February 24, 2025, after attending what he suspected was a staged immigration interview. “I have a feeling this could be a trap,” Mahdawi told CBS News the day before his arrest. He added, “I want people to know that my compassion extended beyond the Palestinian people. My compassion is also for the Jewish people and for the Israelis as well.”
