The Good News For Immigrants

COLUMN — On the Fourth of July, the fireworks were just a soundtrack to history’s meanest immigration bill.

The “One Big Beautiful Bill Act,” passed in a flash and signed by Donald Trump with a grin wide as Mar-a-Lago’s gold elevators, is a legislative horror. It pours $45 billion into immigrant detention—enough to put toddlers in concrete cages for years.

It slashes food aid, axes access to health care, and shoves tens of thousands of poor, lawful immigrants—some of them children who’ve been raped or trafficked—off the safety net with bureaucratic cruelty so precise it practically comes gift-wrapped.

And yet, the bill is beautiful. Not for what it does, but for what it shows: the road to amnesty has never been clearer. The bill was beautiful because citizenship is coming in the next decade. A limited amnesty could happen in this Congress if Trump fires Stephen Miller and the pendulum can swing back.
