FIRST LOOK: Rep. Pramila Jayapal Introduces Bill to Repeal Alien Registration Act of 1940
'No Round Up Act' seeks to end long-dormant law used for Japanese internment and post 9-11 profiling
WASHINGTON — House Democrats, led by Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-WA), have introduced the No Round Up Act, legislation aimed at repealing the Alien Registration Act of 1940, a law that required non-citizens to register with the government. The bill, introduced in the 119th Congress, seeks to remove provisions that critics argue are outdated and rooted in wartime xenophobia.
If passed, the bill would eliminate federal registration requirements for immigrants, repeal penalties for non-compliance, and modify related sections of the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA) to reflect the change.
