WASHINGTON —On Friday, the House passed Rep. Nancy Mace’s (R-SC) bill, H.R. 30, the “Violence Against Women by Illegal Aliens Act” by 274 - 145. It’s the latest in the string of immigration bills that House Speaker Mike Johnson is quickly whipping his party to pass before president-elect Donald Trump takes office on January 20th. The next on the list is H.R. 31, advanced in the Houss Rules Package on January 3.

The bill by Rep. Anthony Garbarino (R-NY) is called the ‘Protect Our Law Enforcement with Immigration Control and Enforcement (POLICE) Act’. Last year the bill passed the House by a bipartisan vote of 255-175. After some ado, Migrant Insider obtained the bill text for the new term which, for reasons yet unknown, is posted nowhere online but here —

Part 3: Note the 1-3 lines at the top of the bill, defining that assault is basically anything any jurisdiction determines it to be.

In 2023, the National Immigration Project led a detailed letter signed by nearly 150 organizations opposing the bill, calling it “political grandstanding, creating powerful tools for abuse in order to solve a problem that does not exist, and lending credence to rhetoric that exposes immigrant communities to harm and violence.” You can read the letter in its entirety here.
