Editor's Note: August Recess
Migrant Insider has quickly become one of the hottest news startups of 2025. What comes next?
August is a quiet month in the Beltway — and you may have noticed Migrant Insider publishing fewer daily stories. Three reasons:
Rest. Since my hard launch on January 3, I’ve worked 29 straight weeks at the breakneck pace of deportation policy news under Trump. Last week, I finally took a few days to nap and loaf with my best friend, Roxy.
Reflection. In eight months, I’ve tested every format to see what resonates with you — my core audience — and what travels far online. The verdict is clear: narrative reporting and original videos outperform everything else. That’s where I’ll focus between now and year’s end.
Fundraising. August marks my 55th straight month as a full-time reporter — most of them spent uninsured, below the poverty line, sometimes skipping meals while bills piled up. Hundreds of thousands read Migrant Insider each month, but only a few hundred pay for it. I’m now in talks with potential business partners to help sustainably fund this work for the long haul. More on that …
