The actual trigger for South Carolina’s secession was the new Congress imposed export tariffs on cotton as a way to stop cotton exports to Britain and force the South to take lower prices from Northern factories.
Britain had recently outlawed slavery but was eager to buy cotton from the South. There was a risk that Britain would supply arms to the South so one year and five months after the Civil War started President Lincoln freed the slaves…making it a war to end slavery and effectively blocking Britain from entering the war as an ally of the south.
Britain opposed slavery but, in 1862, even the British believed the white race was superior.
White supremacy is very plainly stated in the Articles of Secession I read. Confederates thought that meant chattel slavery was proper, and northern white supremacists thought that was a bit harsh (or were just wary of the growing black population). They went on and on about the country being founded on white supremacy and the federal government now reneging on that original understanding. Tariffs seemed to be a secondary concern.
