On Monday, we ran into freshman Senator Andy Kim, a New Jersey Democrat, outside the senate chamber where he agreed to answer some of our questions about H1B reform. Kim is one of over a dozen lawmakers we’ve interviewed about the possibility of reform in the new term. We include Kim’s responses complete and unabridged below.

Pablo: Hello Senator, quick question about H1B reform. Should there be reform? We’re talking about Elon Musk and his group and the Maga universe have been supportive of reform policies that include relief elements of migrants themselves. That’s caused a divide in Trump world. We’re asking members of Congress where they fall on H1B reform. There’s hasn’t been a reform package that has been successful in a long time. Where are you at on it?
Senator Andy Kim: I’ll be honest, let me start by saying that I haven’t tracked all the inside…I don’t actually go on social media, so I don’t know what reforms are mentioned. When I am saying I’m for, I don’t want to say I am associating myself with what they say…I just….
Pablo: Yeah, I understand…
Senator Andy Kim: Look, first and foremost, I’m a son of immigrants. My father was someone who came here to study. He was born in the Korean War, went here, ended up getting a PhD in genetics, you know, someone who has contributed to our country in different ways, so, I certainly believe that right now, with this real concern about American strategic competitiveness globally, we need to be able to continually bring in talent from around the world.
