WASHINGTON — The snow on Lake Street in a quiet suburb of Minneapolis was the kind that packs hard when you press something into it. Like a knee. Or a face.
Tonika Deutch was standing outside the Karmel Mall on Monday afternoon when she saw the federal agents put the woman down on the ground. The woman was in handcuffs. Face-down. The agents put their knees on her.
“She is pregnant,” Deutch yelled at them. “She’s pregnant.” The agents kept their knees on her. “She can’t breathe,” Deutch yelled. “Let her up. Let her up.”
The agents kept their knees on her back. In the snow. On Lake Street in Minneapolis, where the temperature was the kind that hurts your face when you walk outside.
Then they dragged her by one arm across the street. The snow made a path.
