ALERT: Kilmar Abrego Garcia Detained Again, Threatened With Uganda Deportation
The Salvadoran father's lawyers say sending him to a country with no ties is retaliatory and dangerous.
WASHINGTON — On Monday, ICE detained Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a Salvadoran man at the center of a high-profile immigration case, during a scheduled check-in at the agency’s Baltimore field office.
The detention comes just three days after Abrego Garcia was released from a Tennessee jail, escalating a contentious legal fight over the government’s plan to deport him to Uganda — a country his lawyers say has no connection to him and where they argue he would face serious risks.

The Department of Homeland Security notified Abrego Garcia’s attorneys over the weekend that deportation could take place within 72 business hours. The move has drawn condemnation from Maryland Democrats, including Sen. Chris Van Hollen, who called it “inhumane and unjust,” and Gov. Wes Moore, who urged judicial oversight.
Abrego Garcia, 39, was wrongfully deported to El Salvador in March before being returned to the U.S. in June to face federal human smuggling charges in Tennessee. He pleaded not guilty and is scheduled to stand trial in January.

Supporters rallied outside the ICE office in Baltimore on Monday, chanting for his release. His wife, U.S. citizen Jennifer Vasquez Sura, and their three children have publicly defended him against DHS Secretary Kristi Noem’s allegations of gang affiliation.
A DHS official told CBS News that Uganda has agreed to accept deportees under a broader arrangement. Abrego Garcia’s attorneys argue the decision is retaliatory and unlawful.
