A Weekend of Resistance: Immigrant Communities Rise Up
Plus, another 'Day Without Immigrants' protest and Shakira's inspiring Grammy acceptance speech to migrant communities.
Good afternoon! It took me all morning to compile a partial list of large pro-immigrant protests across the country over the weekend. The sheer amount of videos we found from actions in solidarity with immigrant communities was so vast, we can’t even share them all here due to Substack’s limits on email length. Let’s jump in, anyway; but before we do —
It’s worth noting that this weekend’s protests were entirely grassroots. That is, the tens of thousands of migrants and allies out in the streets Los Angeles to New York City, St. Louis to Idaho Falls, Charlotte to Phoenix, aren’t waiting for institutional permission or support to get loud for their families, friends, and neighbors under siege by ICE.
This is an extremely hopeful development. Make no mistake: the next four years will be hard on migrant communities, but the weekend’s protests made clear that migrants are not alone. Migrant families have champions who are willing to get loud in the streets alongside the most vulnerable Americans.
So without further ado, here are some immigration protests from around the country over the weekend, listed in alphabetical order —

A DAY WITHOUT IMMIGRANTS
Immigrants are staying home today across the nation in a “Day Without Immigrants” protest that began in a Facebook chat and has since caught fire. My Uber driver last night told me he’d be staying home today in solidarity. Even the best bagel shop in D.C. (according to The Washington Post, and I tend to agree) is closed in solidarity —

SHAKIRA, SHAKIRA
Last night, Shakira won the grammy for Best Latin Pop Album. The Colombian-born superstar used her acceptance speech to offer message of solidarity to the immigrant communities under siege. “I want to dedicate this award to all my immigrant brothers and sisters in this country," she said. "You are loved, you are worth it, and I will always fight with you.” Full speech here—
